You must complete both Part A and Part B. Your answer must be typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12 point font. You are expected to use concepts, ideas, and examples from the readings. You must provide citations for ideas and quotations taken from the readings, using APA formatting. Number your pages. Total word count: 1200 words (see section word length limits below).
Part A: Imagine you are back in your high school. While you were discussing missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in a class, someone said that she would never have put herself in a situation of hitching a ride or getting too high to know what is going on, and in general, she would be much smarter about protecting herself in order to avoid being assaulted and murdered. Write an open letter to your class to explain why such an understanding of Indigenous women’s lives is problematic. Discuss comprehensively how Indigenous women are resisting the conditions that they face. Your answer should involve an explanation of the racialized and sexualized realities they face and how they go about resisting them. Make three arguments in this letter. You must use at least 2 chapters from Kim Anderson’s book.
For part A, an A-range answer will:
• Fully explain the racialized and sexualized realities faced by Indigenous women
• Fully explain the meaning of resistance in relation to the realities or conditions that Indigenous women experience.
• Two chapters are fully utilized with direct quotes and your own comprehensive explanations
• Fully illustrate your 3 arguments with concrete examples.
• Be well organized, grammatically correct, and provide necessary citations.
• Be at least 600 words in length.
Part B: Choose a recent or current event happening in Canada that perpetuates colonialism. Devote no more than
2-3 sentences to describing or summarizing this event. Then, explain how this event upholds colonialism and the oppression of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Describe how you can, or have, contribute(d) to the resistance against this form of colonialism in Canada. Discuss two further ways in which you can resist (any form of) colonialism in Canada, including the specific steps you can take. Your answer should be grounded in Part A and the associated readings used and should include at least one additional resource describing the event (such as a news article).
For Part B, An A-range answer will:
• Demonstrate original thought and nuanced analysis of a recent/current event and how it upholds colonialism
• Provide a complex and thoughtful analysis of your own ability and responsibility to resist colonialism in Canada, providing at least 3 concrete examples
• Effectively integrate the readings and news article.
• Be organized, grammatically correct, and provide citations as needed.
• Be at least 600 words in length
News Article for part B.
