Required:Textbook: Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing *Do not use any outside sources*
Using the guidelines presented in chapter 5 of our textbook, construct an analysis of EITHER Edward Conrad’s “We Don’t Need More Humanities Majors” (p. 419) OR Madsbjerg & Rasmussen’s “We Need More Humanities Majors” (p. 421). You will probably need to read the article several times in order to be able to thoroughly analyze its contents and the author’s effectiveness in presenting his or her argument.
Remember to clearly state your thesis, which is your judgment of the article’s effectiveness, and to support your judgment with clear explanations (reasons) and quoted examples from the original article that illustrate your points. You must also include (probably in your introduction) the author’s thesis that is presented in his/her article.
As outlined in chapter 5, your essay must include an analysis of the following areas: the author’s title, the author’s thesis placement, the author’s purpose, the author’s methods of evidence, the author’s persona, and the author’s conclusion.
You may also include an analysis of the author’s logic, including any fallacies he or she may have included, as well as a discussion of relevant writing devices, such as irony, sarcasm, metaphor, analogy, or hyperbole.
But these should be discussed ONLY after the required points have been adequately addressed and supported, and be careful not to argue the issue as there will be points deducted for doing so. To put it bluntly, it doesn’t matter what you think about the issue of STEM or the Humanities because your focus should be on the writing techniques and presentation of the argument.
*Do not argue the issue* Instead, examine the author’s written argument for soundness, validity, and effectiveness in terms of his/her writing techniques (the points listed above). See p. 188 for a sample analysis essay with an explanation of each point and the student sample essay in the Module where the assignment is listed.
HINT: You will also be completing a reader sheet for each article. Try completing the reader sheets before writing this essay.
Checklist for constructing an argument analysis:
* A clear thesis (judgment of the piece)
* A fair discussion of all the required components.
* Sufficient relevant quotations (examples) from the article that support/prove your points.
* Clear introduction of the piece and author.
* A conclusion that brings closure to your analysis.
* A coherently organized essay with fully developed paragraphs and transitions.
* Transitions between points to help the essay flow smoothly.
* Adequate discussion of author’s tone.
* Appropriate tone on your part.
* Sentences free of fragments, run-ons, and mixed constructions.
* Consistent verb tense.
* Clear pronoun references.
* Correct MLA format including in-text citations AND works cited page. For more information on We Don’t Need More Humanities Majors check on this: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=We+Don%E2%80%99t+Need+More+Humanities+Majors
