Vincent Chin
In the Q & A section of CAAM’s Vincent Chin 30: Standing Up Then & Now (24:56) Vincent Pan (Links to an external site.) of Chinese for Affirmative Action talks about Vincent Chin the man as being dead longer than he was alive and the kinds of myths surrounding the Vincent Chin case as we reach the 40th anniversary of Chin’s murder. Write a 3-4 page essay (1,000+ words) examining the Vincent Chin case and attempt to answer Vincent Pan’s questions: “What are the lessons we want to learn from the Vincent Chin case? What are the lessons we want to retell?”
Your goal with this essay is to apply what you learned about cultural myth in order to deconstruct Vincent Chin. What role does the idea of the American dream play in the Vincent Chin case? What myths about race and success did Vincent Chin’s murder challenge? What myths exist around the Vincent Chin case exist 40 years later?
