Paper 1: Class or Gender Analysis
Topic: Analyze one section of “The Necklace” (except for section one which we discussed in class) or any section of “A Conversation Between Two Mothers” from the perspective of gender or social class.
For your convenience, I posted the stories on Sakai (“Resources”) along with the Beauvoir and Marx quotes we discussed in class.
Grades and Offer of Help: Grading Criteria: depth of analysis; specificity of argument; and the quality of the writing (e.g. paragraph development, essay structure, and grammar). We will do an in-class review next week. You are most welcome to meet with me to discuss your ideas.
Part One: to craft a succinct thesis, consider beginning your essay with a direct topic sentence to identify your essay’s guiding concept. For example:
Gender: Section seven of “The Necklace” shows Matilda Loisel’s partial development from a “pretty” young woman to a “strong,” adult woman.
Class: “A Conversation Between Two Mothers” is ripe with indicators of working-class symbolism and culture.
The first paragraph should have no more than 6 sentences to save space for your analysis. Part Two (pages 1-5) should present your detailed analysis. Please don’t just repeat class lectures (that will get you a grade of “C” or below). Expand on them and develop your ideas. My goal is to help you create your own original analysis.
Give your essay a title: that will help you clarify your ideas. You are welcome to quote from the theorists we discussed in class or do a bit of research, but you don’t have to do that.
Be sure to give page numbers from the play and a Works Cited in the MLA stylesheet for any text you cite. To save paper, the Works Cited may be on the same page as your conclusion.
