Your paper should include an informative summary of the text. You should show an understanding of the text, and familiarity with relevant course concepts. Your summary should give your reader a sense of overall content and important aspects of the original work. It should include the central problem or issue the author is addressing, the key argument(s) and main supporting points. You should also state and define all key concepts used by the author.
This response paper requires critical engagement with the text. It should therefore include an evaluation of the merit of the text. You may comment on the accurateness, completeness, and organization of the text. You can also look at the strengths and weaknesses of the author’s discussion. Does the author provide convincing evidence to back up the claims?
You can examine whether the author makes any assumptions in the text, and whether these are valid or biased. You can also put forward counter-arguments to the author’s ideas. You can constructively critique the text. You may discuss anything important that the text does not address; or whether the text brings up any specific questions that can be explored further. You can also say whether you find the text, arguments or concepts useful. Are they related to issues in our present-day Caribbean region, the world, or the human experience?
This assignment asks about your response to the text, and why you react in a certain way after reading it. You may use the following questions to guide your writing. Does the material relate to your life, experiences, feelings and ideas? What prompted this reaction? Did the text increase your understanding of a particular issue, or change your perspective? Would you recommend it to others, and why (or why not)?
There should be a balance between summarizing the work, evaluating it, and your reaction to it.
Introduction: Your Introduction should state the author and title of the text. It should be clear, state the focus, and provide an overall outline of your work
General Style: You must use good essay style with a connecting/logical flow. You must also have a clear conclusion. Spelling, grammar, sentence/paragraph construction and presentation all count. Unless quoting directly from the text, information from your source(s) should be paraphrased. Direct quotes should be in quotation marks and properly cited.
Citations / Referencing: All ideas or quotations taken from readings must be referenced. You must use proper referencing style in the body of your essay and proper bibliographic style (i.e. Bibliography or ‘References’ page). Any conventional referencing style may be used, as long as it is done correctly and consistently throughout the assignment.
