EN 201Reading CritiquesWorld Lit 1 Dr Knutson
You will be turning in Reading Critiques over the course of the semester, each over one of the major readings discussed in class. For the reading critique, YOU DO NOT WRITE A SUMMARY of the events in the story, nor do you write about the author’s biography. Instead, you need to ANALYZE what you have read. In other words, you give your own personal view of what you have read. Then, you back up this view with specific events in the story to support your viewpoint. You want to include one quotation.
I would recommend that you focus on what you think is important in the reading. Do you want to write about the main character and the behaviour of that character? Do you want to write about the conflict in the story, and how it plays out? What about what is humorous or ironic? Would you rather write about what you think is the theme or main point of the story? Do you want to write about how female characters behave and are treated? Male characters? Don’t write about everything. Instead, choose something specific to focus on. Write about your topic, and then talk about the events in the story that explain what you are writing about. Try to write about something you feel passionate about in the story.
Format: Use 12-point font. Your critique needs to be about one or one and a half to 2 typed pages long. You want to double space. You are required to use one quotation from the text that is punctuated correctly, according to MLA. The quote has 3 parts: a) an intro tag b) the exact quote c) the citation.
Ie: According to Homer, Achilles screamed “I will kill Hector” after Patroklus’s death (Homer 920).
Use terms referring to literary analysis including plot, setting, character, conflict, climax, irony, foreshadowing, imagery, mood, symbol, etc.
NOTE: You must do your own work for this assignment or risk failing the course for plagiarism. You cannot copy something you find on the internet, nor copy someone else’s paper. You want to instead explore your own ideas. For more information on Inferno check on this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inferno
