A large portion of our identity is composed of memory: individual memories of our interactions with the world and the people we encounter in our daily journeys around the sun; and social memories that have been passed on through the relationships we share with others in our lives. Social or collective memories are composed of direct communications with others as well as well as cultural memories that have been passed on to us in the form of traditions.
Among these traditions are the ways we express our faith, the cuisines that we associate with our ethnic heritage, and the styles of music we listen to that both connect our generation to the past and provide unique elements that distinguish us from others in the present. How have traditional aspects of religion, cuisine, and music contributed to shaping your personal identity? Which of these elements has had the most important influence on your social identity?
