Abstract
This paper examines how e-commerce companies address privacy in their policies. All e-Commerce companies’ websites are subject to privacy laws that protect the companies’ clients from the manipulation of personal information. Ecommerce companies, therefore, have included the terms and conditions option on their websites so as to improve privacy policy. Ecommerce companies deal with privacy policies by defining the types of data that the organization’s websites collect, how the data is collected, and the methods used to store the client’s information.
Introduction
Even with the e-commerce companies urge to enhance the efficiency of business activities, the privacy of the clients, and the organization’s data remains critical. Due to the variance of regulations from one country to another, it isn’t easy for e-commerce companies to address the privacy policies (Spencer, 2016). Therefore, e-commerce companies are coming up with strategies that help in enhancing privacy policies. With advancements in technology, reports show that privacy concerns are becoming rampant in e-commerce companies and thus leaving the task of client’s data protection to the companies.
Literature Review
Ecommerce privacy policies are enshrined in the laws of different countries. The companies, therefore, need privacy policies so as to operate under the law and to appease the clients. Ecommerce companies are using the data gathered from the clients to improve the privacy policies in relation to the laws of operational jurisdiction. In addition, the companies are embarking on evidence-based methods to formulate privacy policies on their websites by learning from the shortcomings resulting from previous experiences.
Research Method
The study largely employed the case studies approach to collect relevant information regarding ways that e-commerce companies use to address privacy in privacy policies. In addition, the information from both established e-commerce companies, including Amazon Companies.
Results
Ecommerce companies use privacy policies to protect the data of its clients. Amazon Company, for example, uses the policies to safeguard the users’ data by requiring the person login to the website to collect data to disclose the type of information obtained through the privacy policy agreement if at all it is personal (“ASW Privacy,” 2018). Also, the e-commerce companies address the issue of privacy in their policy by including the user location since the companies’ websites are of collecting the IP addresses of their users.
Discussion
Ecommerce policies address the privacy issues by limiting the persons from accessing personal information by complying with the laws of different jurisdictions within which the online enterprises operate.
Conclusion
With the increasing use of e-commerce, the companies interact with more customers’ data and therefore, to ensure security, privacy policies are made. Recommendations to the literature are that privacy policies for e-commerce enterprises are subject to change, and therefore, as technology keeps on changing and advancing, the companies should create policies that respond to the emerging privacy needs. Finally, the fact that e-commerce companies operate in different jurisdictions it becomes complicated for the companies to address the privacy issues in the policy (Allen, Rotenberg, & Lampe, 2011).
