The healthcare system is continually evolving which requires all aspects of nursing to change as well in order to keep up. Nurse educators must also evolve to meet these changes. The pandemic this year has brought telehealth to light as it provides a safer means to receive care online versus in person. With the surge in the need to meet patient care demands, it is an opportune time for innovative care delivery by telehealth (Fathi et al., 2017). The advancement in technology coupled with the demand for new approaches to care in the COVID-19 pandemic puts healthcare professionals, including nurse educators, in the position to deploy telehealth technology. Telemedicine just means “healing at a distance” and reduces the risk of transmission from both the healthcare provider and the patient. I work directly on the COVID unit and have been since the beginning of March. Telemedicine has helped our hospital tremendously. On our floor, we have iPads set up in each room and can facetime the patient from our desk. All the providers in the hospital can do this as well. In this case, we do not need to go into the room for every small thing. For example, the patient can still receive a visit from the chaplain and receive holistic care. The virus is not stopping us from providing our patients with the highest level of care. Telehealth also allows us to meet with the patients that have been discharged from our hospital and allow us to monitor them at home using an iPad. The case managers overnight ship a telehealth iPad to the patients and provide them with a pulse oximeter and an app that allows us to track their vital signs. Every day, a nurse can communicate with the patient and follow up with them. This reduces the stress on the hospital because we can monitor these patients at home and evaluate for any acute changes that put them at risk for declining. Our nurse educators can educate the patients and use a phone or iPad to communicate with individuals. I believe this pandemic has forced the healthcare system to find ways to serve more people through technology and wireless communications. It allows the delivery of remote care to more rural populations as well (Fathi et al., 2017). I believe the role of the nurse educator will be strengthened due to telemedicine because it will allow for a greater number of individuals to receive care and education. Chronic illnesses are very common and require a lot of education to be managed. Continuity of care in the transition of chronically ill patients from the hospital to home has improved due to telemedicine (Fathi et al., 2017). Patients became more involved in self-care and understood the time to report systems in a timely manner when educators were able to communicate through telemedicine.

Health Care reform can affect nursing education because possibly certain people can lose their access to health care, if this happens then we must always remember that we must focus on improving access and health care delivery to everyone and as a nurse educator we must include this in our teaching (Matthews, 2017). If the patient does not have health insurance they have to be treated no matter what. We must remember that patient-centered care is the number one thing to remember. Also the change in policy for opioid addiction is also being considered, we must positively impact these patients that are addicted. It is the duty of any nurse and the nurse educator to help when these changes come down. teaching the student that the biases that they may feel cannot affect their care of the patient is most important no matter what changes in reform happen.
