▪ By now you should all realize my belief in the importance of Perception Management and the potential for influencing the “hearts and minds” of citizens, combatants, and the rest of the world to help facilitate a specific outcome. We have read in the mainstream media the actions of nation-states to influence the U.S. presidential elections. The election of 2020 is over, and we have experienced a major change in the executive and legislative branches of the government. It would appear that there has been a very sharp divide created in the nation which the President during his inauguration speech said it is time to heal. Looking at it from the viewpoint of potential adversaries, a unified United States is stronger. A stronger U.S. is not good for them. What they will want is a weaker U.S.
▪ Keeping in mind Sun Tzu’s statement that defeating your enemy in combat is not the ultimate in skill but rather defeating your enemy without having to engage in combat is the ultimate skill, put yourself in the place of potential adversaries to the U.S. and devise a campaign against the U.S. to not only keep the divide that currently exists but to, if possible, increase it. Submit a paper of no less than 3500 words that will cover the following two items:
Part 1: Describe the current divide that exists between the “left” and the “right” within the U.S. BE CAREFUL TO PROVIDE THE POINTS FROM EACH SIDE WITHOUT ENGAGING IN PERCEPTION MANAGEMENT YOURSELF!!! IOW, I do not want to see anybody calling one side or the other “Fascists”, “Communists”, “Pedophiles”, etc. and I don’t want to see anything about “debunked” beliefs or assertions. You can certainly say something like one side believes that the other are fascists, but you should not say something like “the fascists on the right believe that…”. Also, be very careful to reference/cite your sources! Remember that to heal the divide you must recognize that others do not necessarily believe the same things you do, and you need to allow both sides to have their opinions while trying to find a center point from which healing can take place. (p1. 40 points, 20 for each side)
Part 2: In this part, it is your opportunity to exploit the divide you described in part 1 and to try and further divide the nation. What specific actions might you take to increase the tension within the U.S. and to ensure that the two sides do not find a middle ground upon which to agree? (p2. 40 points) What use of the Internet will you utilize to reach your goal? (p3. 20 points)
▪ Papers should be no less than 3500 words NOT including a section for references. No title page is necessary but includes your name on the assignment. Use a reasonable font and margins and no more than a line spacing of 1.5. The assignment should be submitted through Blackboard.
▪ Grades on the paper will be based on how thoroughly you cover each of the items as listed above.
▪ Make sure you appropriately reference any other documents that you use and definitely provide references for any information you quote from another source! Cite your sources at the point of the quotation or if you make a statement of fact that is not generally known to the public.
